Syracuse Crawfish Festival

The Syracuse Crawfish Festival is a fun, family-friendly event held the first Saturday in May in the heart of downtown Syracuse. It holds the bragging rights of being the first festival of the season, offering authentic Cajun Music, lively dancing, crafters, vendors and an endless assortment of delicious food otherwise only offered on the Gulf Coast. It is organized and executed by a well-established local nonprofit organization, Operation Northern Comfort (ONC), a group of skilled volunteers who work tirelessly year-round to serve the needs of our community. This festival acts as a fundraiser to provide operating dollars for ONC's mission, "empowering and giving hope to those in need." The roots of ONC, originally known as "Operation Southern Comfort," were planted following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, a small group of brave Central New Yorkers donated their time and energy to travel to New Orleans and aid in the cleanup effort. Since then, there have been 66 trips to provide relief to areas devastated by natural disasters. We have already made our first trip of 2024. In January we traveled to Buffalo, NY to continue repairs at a church. We will organize and go where we are needed when we are needed. The individuals behind ONC pride themselves on their projects, including 5 -home rebuilds, over 90 ramp installations, 14 lift installations and hundreds of home improvements. ONC is responsible for the Desks4Kids Initiative, which saw over 1,500 desks build for children in need of dedicated in home learning spaces, as well as Bookshelves4Kids, a literary initiative to provide children with books and bookshelves. To date we have built and delivered over 400 book shelves. Our goal is to continue providing services for our community and develop new projects in accordance with the needs our local people. The 17th Annual Syracuse Crawfish Festival has free admission and will feature five local bands that will take the stage to bring live musical entertainment to attendees. This year, we will have a Native American dance performance as well as a performance by dancers from PGR Inc. We are proud to present over 50 small business crafters and vendors who will offer their products and creations for sale. This festival provides free space for other local nonprofits, giving them the opportunity to distribute their information and sell items for their own fundraising efforts. DJ's from local radio station and media sponsor "Inner Harbor Media" will introduce the bands and the annual Mascot Dance Off, where Syracuse's favorite mascots will compete for the title of best dancer and a donation to the charity of their choice. The festival includes a kid's area where children will enjoy face painting, a magician, games and kid-friendly food options. The star of the show is our fresh crawfish and shrimp flown up from the Gulf Coast the day before our festival and prepared by our Louisiana-trained boilers. Event-goers are offered the unique experience to talk with boilers and learn the proper way to eat crawfish. There are also opportunities to indulge in authentic Cajun cuisines, including crawfish mac and cheese, Jambalaya, Gumbo, Bread Pudding and Beignets. Festival attendees may choose from regional favorites, including Hofmann's hotdogs, Gianelli Sausage, pulled pork, walking tacos and New England clams. Eight local food trucks will feature their specialty drinks and dishes. The 17th Annual Syracuse Crawfish Festival will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 11 am-7 pm in Clinton Square, with 100% of profits earned to fund future ONC projects. ONC is a 100% volunteer run organization.

May 9th 6:00pm –8:00pm

$32 Members | $40 Non-Members

Come make a data-driven patchwork quilt block! Learn basic hand sewing skills to create a piece of fabric art that translates your personal data into fabrics, colors, and shapes, resulting in a design that is uniquely your own. No sewing experience required; materials will be provided. Once your block is constructed, instructions and advice for finishing at home will be provided, or you can leave your block to be combined with others into a larger community quilt.

Artist Bio:

After an early career in graphic design, Rachel Ivy Clarke turned to librarianship, which led to her current role as an associate professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. Her award-winning research focuses on the application of design methodologies and epistemologies to librarianship to facilitate the systematic, purposeful creation of library services. She combines her interests in information studies, design, and textile arts to juxtapose hard data and soft textiles, using fabrics and colors to visualize information in a tangible, visceral way. She earned a BA in creative writing from California State University Long Beach, an MLIS from San Jose State University, and a PhD from the University of Washington.

In This Moment: The Godmode Tour

In This Moment: THE GODMODE TOUR is coming to the Landmark Theatre with special guests Kim Dracula, I See Stars and Mike's Dead.

With a Grammy nomination (“The In-Between,” 2021), platinum and gold record sales, multiple Top 25 entries on the Billboard Top 200 (“Black Widow” and “Ritual”), hits including “Whore,” “Blood,” and ”Adrenalize” and career streams of more than 1.3 billion, you’d think In This Moment might rest on their laurels. Instead, they’ve created GODMODE, 10 dynamic songs that mark a new high for the quintet, further cementing their legacy in the heavy music world. Proof positive is in GODMODE’s first single, the industrial-heavy yet ultra-melodic “THE PURGE,” and its darkly cinematic video directed by Jensen Noen (Bring Me The Horizon, Demi Lovato). From the portentous start of the ‘90s-tinged “GODMODE” with Maria Brink’s powerful primal scream to the pitch-perfect cover of Bjork’s 1995 “Army of Me” to the impassioned pain to partnership in “EVERYTHING STARTS AND ENDS WITH YOU,” GODMODE is a cut above.

Off the Rack

On view through May 5, 2024

Off the Rack is the happy by-product of a major renovation of the Everson's on-site art storage. As hundreds of paintings and framed works are displaced from their racks while renovations take place, the public has an unprecedented opportunity to view objects that have been in deep storage for years, never-before-seen recent acquisitions, and some perennial favorites—all hung together salon-style in our exhibition galleries. This smorgasbord of paintings and works on paper showcases the breadth and depth of the Museum's collections and provides a glimpse into the world of collections management and care.

Janet Biggs: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape

On view February 10, 2024-May 12, 2024

In 2009 and 2010, Janet Biggs traveled to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard with a crew of artists and scientists to document the changing Arctic landscape. As the subject of centuries of exploration, the Arctic was once seen as indifferent to human enterprise, so vast and inhospitable as to be immune to any imposition. Today, scientists expect climate change to leave Arctic summers ice-free as early as the next decade, and Svalbard, located halfway between Europe and the North Pole, finds itself at the epicenter of this metamorphoses. Using footage compiled on her voyages north, Biggs explores this history and the alarming consequences of human enterprise in three videos: Warning Shot (2016), Brightness All Around (2011), and Fade to White (2010). Shown together, these works are a clarion call for a heroic landscape that will completely transform within our lifetimes.

Janet Biggs: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape is organized by the Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Barry Lopez Foundation works with contemporary artists to organize exhibitions addressing climate change, biodiversity, habitat loss, and our relationship with the land in a time of environmental crisis.

"Poetry is language at its most distilled and powerful." -Rita Dove

In this first four-week installment of Salty Spring Poets Club, we will pour language into classical poetic forms. What can forms like the sonnet and haiku teach us about calibrating language with power and intentionality? How does the prose poem emerge as a tool for breaking the rules and sequencing images? Each session, we will investigate a handful of poems written by contemporary poets and write our own poems in conversation with form and immediate environment.

Using the Everson’s permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, we will write in response to visual artworks relevant to our desires and interests. Sessions will prioritize generative writing and supportive, encouraging feedback. At the end of the month, we will perform for our loved ones and peers, coming away with a portfolio of four or more carefully crafted poems.

Godspell

Conceived and Originally Directed by JOHN MICHAEL TEBELAK

Music and New Lyrics by STEPHEN SCHWARTZ

Originally Produced on the New York Stage by

EDGAR LANSBURY / STUART DUNCAN / JOSEPH BERUH

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the Broadway legend behind Wicked, and based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, Godspell is a modern imagining of the last days of Jesus. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. Often comedic and at times haunting, Godspell is a religious experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man.

I've Learned To Hold Myself Softly: Cali M. Banks

Comprised of 30 images and one film, Banks has created an exhibition with Syracuse as her muse.

She began documenting her hometown of Syracuse in November 2022. When she traveled back to places of importance during my "coming of age" years, she realized many places of both solace and nostalgia have been demolished or abandoned. Banks started to rework this experimental, documentary project with ideas of "teardown towns" and blind tradition. She utilizes self-portraiture, still-lives, and architecture that is specific to Syracuse, and symbolism depicting bodies, ritual, and sensuality, which in turn uses nonverbal communication as a way to emphasize tradition. This project also explores the complexities of layers of existence through materialistic remnants and the essence of non-tangibility. With a rapidly changing hometown as the core of the work, Banks is capturing attention with a familiar setting to the community.

In/Visible Breaths: Afro-poetics in Technology

An Afro-Surrealist public humanities project that uses museum-based archives—from the Syracuse University Art Museum and Special Collections Research Center at SU—within virtual- and extended-reality (VR/XR) technology to generate meditation-based visual art experiences that incite literacy development. Navigating mindfulness at the intersection of technology and literacy, this project hopes to inspire moments of stillness and reflection by embedding various breathing techniques and mantras within the VR/XR installation and the Afro-poetic stimuli itself. Participants will be able to interact with the virtual environment and create poems based on their own experiences.

Crime of the Century: Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw, and the Murder of Stanford White

Evelyn Nesbit first captivated Americans with her beauty and charm, then became the sympathetic focus of the Crime of the Century in 1906, following the murder of her former paramour, famed architect Stanford White, by her unhinged millionaire husband, Harry K. Thaw. The staged reading of a new play by Syracuse playwright Garrett Heater mixes early musical theater sensationalism with the tragedy of Nesbit's abuse by men, money, and the media.
